Why do we eat when we talk about death?

When Erin and I talked about starting Sips & Wishes, we brainstormed our format.

A party, definitely a party…because who doesn’t love a party? Talking about death, dying and our wishes shouldn’t be taboo or melancholy. We wanted to promote sitting around a table and having a relaxed conversation (we're old...that's our kind of party).

Erin said: Beverages – whatever that looks like to the host. If you love whiskey and want to serve whiskey, go for it. If your mother wants hot tea, serve hot tea. Root beer floats? Wine from Napa Valley or champagne from France. Pick whatever sounds good to you. Chances are your guests will love whatever you provide.

I love food and love hosting parties just so I can try out new recipes. Appetizers, finger foods, chips & dips, sweets, or a three-course meal. But if cooking gives you anxiety, grab a veggie tray from the grocery store and call it good. Having a Sips & Wishes party should be a fun and relaxed experience for the host, too.

But why do we eat when we talk about death? Simple: it makes sense that we should nourish our living bodies as we talk about our bodies dying. Let's bring the normal of eating with us as we go through the discomfort of the conversation together.

That’s why we’re here…to facilitate the information, answer questions, and leave you feeling empowered.
